Michigan Man Sentenced To 327 Months In Drug Case
The war on drugs has been a hot topic and something law enforcement has been focused on since the late 80s and early 90s. You would think that they would have found a permanent solution to this problem, but instead the war is still ongoing, and some would say even worse than it was back then.
The happenings of the late 1900s set the precedent for something to be done about the ravaging drug problem in the United States. This led to many drugs being given longer and harsher punishments for possession, distribution, or intent to do so. Most of these laws still stand to this day and are some of the most enforced laws in the country.
A Michigan man found this out the hard way when he was recently sentenced to prison for his drug infractions. Michael Warren Smith Jr. was given 327 months which is equivalent to just over 27 years in prison for multiple drug charges involving the possession and selling of methamphetamines, fentanyl and cocaine.
Authorities conducted a search warrant on 2 separate properties in Kalamazoo with ties to Smith, a home on Elmwood Street and an apartment located on West Main Street. Between the two residences they found six pounds of meth, nearly 700 grams of fentanyl, at least 470 grams of cocaine, five loaded firearms and other evidence of drug trafficking.
This was a high-profile case as well considering the DEA, ATF, KVET, and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety all worked together on the case. The captain of KVET and the Special Agent in Charge of Detroit's ATF branch are pleased with the long sentence. They are hoping this will keep others in check knowing that there will be consequences if they are going to be illegally armed drug dealers.
