Warm weather has arrived in West Michigan, prompting many, myself included, to seek out cool bodies of water for relief from the intense heat.

Michigan boasts nearly 2,000 lakes, but some are currently closed or under advisory due to potentially harmful bacteria that could sicken swimmers.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has a helpful list that is constantly being updated with the water quality levels at beaches across the state.

As of publication, twelve beaches are closed or under a contamination warning.

Michigan Beaches That Are Closed Or Under A Contamination Advisory

Bay City State Recreation Area, Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron, Bay County, has been closed since July 21 due to high bacteria levels from runoff.

Bessinger Road Beach, Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron, Arenac County, is under a contamination advisory since July 22 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Cemetery Beach, Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron, Arenac County is under a contamination advisory since July 22 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Crossroads For Youth, Handsome Lake, Oakland County is closed since July 22 due to high bacteria levels from wildlife.

Dumont Lake County Park Beach, Dumont Lake, Allegan County has been under a contamination advisory since July 9 due to high levels of E. coli from runoff.

Elm Point Beach, Lake Charlevoix, Charlevoix County has been under a contamination advisory going all the way back to July 1st due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Four Mile Beach, St. Marys River, Chippewa County is under a contamination advisory since July 16 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Independence Oaks County Park, Crooked Lake, Oakland County has been closed since July 22 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Lakeview Waterfront Park, Houghton Lake, Roscommon County is under a contamination advisory since July 8th due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, Lake St. Clair, Macomb County is under a contamination advisory since July 17 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Sunday Lake Beach, Sunday Lake, Gogebic County is closed since July 16 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Sunset Park, West Grand Traverse Bay/Lake Michigan, Grand Traverse County is under a contamination advisory since June 26 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
