Our first taste of summer!

I know we've only just reached the spring equinox but here's another good sign of things to come: your favorite local ice cream stands across Southwest Michigan have begun opening for the 2025 season.

While we've enjoyed several 70 degree days this month, some local mom and pops shops chose to brave the elements and fickle Michigan weather to open in early March, as they do each year.

Don't get me wrong, I love ice cream as much as the next gal but I can't say I've got a hankering for it when there's still snow on the ground! The people first in line at the Plainwell Ice Cream Co. on opening day are probably the same people who wear shorts in winter. I guess to each their own.

However, now that we're finally starting to see the sun again I'm ready for my first "Monster" of the year at Dean's Ice Cream in Plainwell or a nice swirl from Twisters in Parchment. Sadly, this will be the first season without beloved Sherman's Dairy Bar in South Haven, Michigan who closed at the end of last season after 66 years serving Southwest Michigan.

By the way, what flavor do you think Michigan's famous Blue Moon ice cream is anyway? Think about that the next time you grab a scoop!
